KUCHING: The National Library of Malaysia (PNM) has launched the Preliminary National Reading Index (IMK) 2026 study to assess Malaysians’ reading habits and provide a foundation for future policies and strategies aimed at strengthening the country’s reading culture.
PNM Research Division’s Assistant Director, Dr Norsharyna Shafawi, said the study is designed to develop a national benchmark for measuring reading practices by evaluating the level, patterns, influencing factors and impact of reading among Malaysians.
“The Preliminary National Reading Index (IMK) 2026 study will provide the basis for measuring the country’s reading index through a comprehensive assessment of reading habits among Malaysians,” she said during the implementation of the study at Kuching Community College (KKKG).
She said the findings would serve as an important reference for government agencies and other stakeholders in planning more effective programmes and initiatives to promote reading nationwide.
The survey at KKKG was conducted through face-to-face interviews and digitally via Google Forms, with respondents taking between five and 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire.
Between 50 and 100 respondents, comprising college staff and students, were targeted for the survey at the institution.
Norsharyna said that every response received would help PNM and the government formulate more comprehensive and impactful policies and initiatives to cultivate a stronger reading culture.
The nationwide IMK 2026 study is being conducted from June 1 to Aug 31, and Malaysians are encouraged to participate to ensure the findings accurately reflect the country’s reading habits.
Earlier, Norsharyna, accompanied by Dr Norhasyimatul Naquiah Ghazali, paid a courtesy call on Kuching Community College’s Director, Sumbang Mandaw, to discuss implementing the study at the college.
Also present were Deputy Director (Management), Elfy Fariza Sharkawi; Deputy Director (Academic), Nurul Hidayah Yussof; and Assistant Librarian, Meno Patrick Bai.
