KUCHING: Malaysian badminton saw a stellar day at the Indonesia Open 2025, as two mixed doubles pairs – Goh Soon Huat/Shevon Jemie Lai and Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei – booked their places in the last eight with confident displays at Istora Senayan, Jakarta today.
Veterans Soon Huat-Shevon Turn Back the Clock
Power couple, Soon Huat and Shevon, rolled back the years with a clinical 21–12, 21–17 win over Indonesia’s Amri Syahnawi and Nita Violina Marwah.
Taking just 33 minutes, the seasoned duo imposed their tempo early and never looked threatened.
“We know our time is limited, but as long as we’re fit, we’ll give it everything.”
said 34-year-old Soon Huat.
Despite missing out on Paris 2024 qualification, the World No. 5 pair have remained consistent performers and now set up a challenging quarter-final clash against Thailand’s Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Supissara Paewsampran today.
World No. 4 Pair Rekindle Spark with Double Victory
In other mixed doubles news, Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei had a tougher route to the last eight, needing two wins in a day to make the cut.
In their opening match, they overcame a stiff challenge from India’s Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto, edging through 21–11, 16–21, 21–14 in 59 minutes.
Though rusty at times, the Malaysians managed to regroup in the decider with better court control and composure.
Their improved cohesion showed clearly in Thursday’s match, where they brushed aside Denmark’s Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch Andreasen 21–9, 21–12 in just 31 minutes – a much sharper performance that reflected their top-tier potential.
Next, Tang Jie-Ee Wei are set to face Amalie Magelund and Jesper Toft of Denmark in the quarter-finals of the Super 1000 tournament later.
