SELANGAU: Palm oil plantation companies are urged to be more attentive to the welfare of local residents, especially during natural disasters such as floods.

Tamin assemblyman Ir Christopher Gira Sambang expressed concern that some companies have played only a minimal role in assisting the local community.

He noted that approximately 20,000 hectares of land in the area are cultivated by five to six companies within the Tamin constituency (DUN).

“For example, when the Tamin constituency was hit by floods, not a single company representative came forward to help the affected residents.

“They should have stepped in by providing food, clothing, and relocating residents to temporary shelters,” he said to the media after the Official Handover Ceremony of a Hearse Van and the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative contributions by Felcra Berhad at the Rukun Tetangga Hall recently.

He expressed hope that these companies would establish closer cooperation with the local community to help alleviate their burdens during disasters.

Meanwhile, Gira praised Felcra Berhad for its proactive efforts in assisting local residents.

“Today, I was informed that they have donated a hearse van for the use of the local community. Additionally, this company also helps schoolchildren in cases of bereavement or flooding.

“Such initiatives should be emulated by other companies in line with their social responsibility to ensure residents receive the necessary assistance,” he added.
