SIBU: Sibu MP Oscar Ling expressed confidence that the federal unity government will bring about reforms across all platforms of democracy to propel the country forward.

He said this needs to be done to ensure the government can change the country for the better in the next five years.

“It’s been 60 years since our country became independent, but not much has changed in our democratic system, for example only Undi-18 and the anti-hopping law so far.

“I believe this unity government will slowly make many changes to the system in our country,” he said at the Interfaith Christmas Celebration 2022 organised by the Association of Churches in Sarawak (ACS) Sibu Branch at a hotel here, Sunday.

Ling said if reforms were carried out the country can move forward and the people can live in harmony.

“What is important is that the government should combat extremists in politics who are feared to threaten harmony and peace.

“We have to put aside different political ideologies to work together to develop this country again after struggling with many problems before with political instability that had a really big impact on the people and the country,” he stressed.

Ling noted that MPs need to voice out more what the people want instead of only focusing on development in parliament.

“Development is carried out by agencies and departments based on the voiced needs of the people. It is up to them to determine or implement it. MPs cannot implement development overnight,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sibu Branch ACS Women’s Chairman Angelyn Uchi Maseng said that the event was held to celebrate Christmas Day which is forthcoming.

“This ceremony is also a platform to further strengthen friendships among religions and races here to share the excitement of the Christmas celebration in general,” she said.

At the event, Ling also donated his personal allocation of RM3,000 to ACS Sibu Branch.

Also present was ACS Sibu Branch Chairman Rev Jonathan Lau, leaders and representatives of other religious institutes.
