KAPIT: A wave of enthusiasm filled the room as senior citizens experienced typing on a computer for the very first time on Sunday.
Thanks to a collaborative special session by the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) Kapit and the Nanga Semulong MADANI Community (KM), senior citizens have the opportunity to learn using computer for the first time.
The session, aimed at enhancing digital literacy in rural communities, focused on basic ICT skills.
One of them particularly is preparing official documents such as meeting minutes.
It brought together participants from diverse age groups, including individuals in their early 20s to those in their 60s, many of whom had never used a computer before.
Many of them said it was truly a huge moment for them.
“This is a proud moment for me,” said chairperson of KM Nanga Semulong, 61-year-old Monica Bansa.
“Being able to type a document myself is something I never imagined. I look forward to learning more,” she further said.
“This training is incredibly useful in helping me understand how to properly prepare formal documents, which is essential for the roles I hold,” said secretary of KM, Bita Ambau, aged 45, who is also a committee member in several organisations.
Led by NADI Kapit staff, the hands-on session proved valuable not only in building participants’ confidence with digital tools but also in fostering a more inclusive and tech-savvy community.
Participants praised the initiative and expressed hope for more such sessions to be held across other rural communities to bridge the digital divide and empower citizens through knowledge.
