KUCHING: Sarawak’s move to have its own airline and plans to develop a new international airport are key to driving and supporting business growth and global connectivity.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, in responding to criticism about the new airport, said the development was necessary to meet future demands.

“Some people complained to me, asking why I want to build such a big airport? They worry it will become a white elephant project.

“But we have our own airline, AirBorneo. If others can do it, why can’t Sarawak? With our own airline, we can bring more people into the state,” he said.

He said this when officiating at the Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sarawak (ACCCIS) 60th anniversary gala dinner held at Imperial Hotel here last night.

He said air travel is a critical enabler for businesses, especially given the value of time to entrepreneurs.

“Businessmen need planes. Time is very precious for them; they can’t afford to wait and queue for tickets.

“Therefore, we must have a good airport, and this would also serve as a platform for the business community to engage with our counterparts overseas,” he said.

In addition to the airport, Abang Johari said the Tanjong Embang deep sea port development is another important component under Sarawak’s gas roadmap.

“We are going to develop our gas road map from Tanjung Embang, right up to the north. And with gas reserves, we want to go downstream as well.

“Furthermore, the shipping industry is now shifting to methanol as part of their agenda to manage climate change. They don’t want to use fuel anymore,” he said.

On Sarawak economic direction, Abang Johari said political stability and unity are of utmost importance in ensuring continued progress.

“We must have a strong and inclusive government that represents all communities. Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is such a government. We will be doing our part, not necessarily depending on others,” he said.

He added that Sarawak’s economic policies must be shaped according to its strengths and needs, even as it continues to operate within the spirit of the Malaysian federation.

“With that, I wish ACCCIS continued success. Let us work together in helping build Sarawak’s future,” said Abang Johari.
