KUCHING: The newly appointed Director of the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), Jamri Masran, expressed his commitment to maintaining the department’s exemplary track record while introducing enhancements during his tenure.
Previously serving as the Commander of the Perak Fire and Rescue Force, Jamri officially assumed his new role on November 19. Highlighting his connection to Sarawak, he noted that his wife is Sarawakian, which makes the state feel like a second home.
“My expectations are not too high because Sarawak Bomba is already among the best in Malaysia. Where improvements are needed, we will make them, but the momentum here is already strong,” he said at a press conference after attending the handing-over-of-duties ceremony at Bomba Headquarters today (Dec 3).
Jamri emphasised the importance of integrating new technologies, including drones, to enhance surveillance capabilities. While Sarawak does not yet have its own drones under Bomba, Jamri revealed plans to collaborate with non-governmental organisations and local volunteer firefighting units to bridge the gap.
“We aim to secure government approval for dedicated drone technology, with a target implementation by 2026. Sarawak’s vast size compared to Peninsular Malaysia requires specialised equipment to ensure comprehensive coverage,” he explained.
He pledged to work closely with local agencies and the community, ensuring that fire safety and rescue operations align with Sarawak’s rapid infrastructure development, including hydroelectric and hydrogen energy projects.
“Fire safety will be integrated into all infrastructure plans, ensuring public safety as Sarawak continues its progress,” he added.
With Sarawak undergoing rapid urbanisation, Jamri stressed the department’s dual role in both rescue operations and fire prevention. He promised a holistic approach to managing emergencies by leveraging cooperation with state and federal authorities.
“Our goal is not just to maintain the high standards of Sarawak Bomba but to raise them further by introducing innovative solutions and fostering stronger community ties,” he said.
