LIMBANG: The government has, in principle, agreed to build a new Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex near Kampung Pendam which is located close to the border with Brunei Darussalam.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the CIQ was essential for enhancing cross-border connectivity, strengthening security cooperation, and stimulating economic integration between Malaysia and Brunei.

“The construction of a CIQ was raised during a recent bilateral meeting between the Malaysian and Brunei Governments.

“So, we have, in principle, agreed to build a CIQ at Kampung Pendam which is near Lumapas, Brunei,” he said after visiting the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge Construction Projecton today.

He further explained that the initiative would not only ease travel and improve mobility but also strengthen economic ties between the two regions.

“This implementation is timely, given that the Second Sungai Limbang Bridge is expected to open for public use in April 2026.

“Both these facilities are expected to have a significant impact on the economy in northern Sarawak,” he said.

If the project proceeds, it will shorten the travel time between the two countries to just about 15 minutes from Limbang town to Lumapas, compared to over 45 minutes when using the Tedungan border checkpoint.
