KUCHING: The implementation of a RM400,000 concrete drainage project in Kampung Rampangi Phase 1 and Phase 2 is a proactive step by the government in addressing flood issues while strengthening basic rural infrastructure for the well-being of residents.

Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, DBKU and Islamic Affairs), Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the project, under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) initiative, is being carried out by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to replace the old and unsystematic drainage system.

He added that Kampung Rampangi, which has been inhabited for over two decades, previously faced flash flood problems due to the lack of an efficient drainage system.

“Through this project, the existing earth drains are being replaced with a more structured and effective concrete drainage system, thereby reducing the risk of flooding,” he said during a working visit to the area on Thursday (April 9).

The project involves an allocation of RM200,000 for each phase, covering the construction of stronger, more systematic, and durable concrete drains to accommodate water flow, especially during heavy rain.

He stressed that the initiative not only resolves flood issues but also improves the comfort and safety of local residents.

“This effort has a direct impact on the quality of life of the residents and supports overall area development.”
