KAPIT: A new ‘dabai’ tree will soon be planted in a more suitable and prominent location to honour its cultural significance to the Song community.

Katibas Assemblyman, Lidam Assan, and Kapit District Council Chairman, Andy Lawrence, made the announcement following public concern over the recent removal of the dabai tree at the Song Waterfront.

Both explained that the action was taken by the Song officer-in-charge (OIC) purely on safety grounds.

“Unfortunately, the decision overlooked the ‘dabai‘ tree’s importance as a cultural symbol and heritage icon for the people of Song, a tree the community had earmarked for the Dabai Belt, a brand and place synonymous with the famous ‘dabai‘ Song,” they said in a joint statement.

Lidam and Andy added that the replanting would serve as a gesture of peace, reconciliation, and a shared commitment to preserving the cultural identity and aspirations of the Song community.

The council will engage regularly with local authorities to coordinate landscape development plans and ensure better understanding in preserving local heritage while enhancing public spaces.

“We sincerely thank the public for their understanding and continued support. Let us move forward together in building a more vibrant and harmonious Song,” they added.
