KUCHING: Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah has announced plans to propose the creation of a dedicated division under her ministry to develop talent among persons with disabilities (PwDs) in Sarawak.
The proposal will focus on supporting individuals with hearing, visual, and intellectual impairments, as well as those with dwarfism, by providing them with resources and opportunities to reach their full potential.

Fatimah made the announcement at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Sarawak 2025 State Games, held at the Dewan Hikmah Exchange Event Centre here last night (May 2).
She expressed her commitment to making Sarawak a powerhouse for PwD sports and ensuring that athletes with disabilities are supported in their pursuit of excellence.
“We envision a future where Sarawak leads in the development of PwD talent, not just in sports but across various other fields,” Fatimah said.
“This division will help empower individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have the opportunity to showcase their abilities and reach their full potential.”
The event also highlighted the significant role of nearly 400 volunteers who dedicate their time to coaching and mentoring athletes with special needs.
Fatimah took the opportunity to express her gratitude for their contributions, acknowledging that the success of the Special Olympics is largely due to their selfless commitment.
“Our volunteers are the backbone of the Special Olympics. Their dedication and passion make this event possible, and we are incredibly grateful for their support,” she stated.
The Special Olympics Sarawak 2025 State Games provide athletes with the opportunity to compete and potentially qualify for the Special Olympics Malaysia National Games, which will be held in Ipoh, Perak, in June.
