SARIKEI: The Sarawak Traffic Games 2025 has been hailed as a crucial platform for nurturing a new generation of road users who prioritise safety, responsibility, and courtesy.
Minister of Transport Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the initiative represents a proactive effort to equip the younger generation with vital knowledge and practical skills in road safety.
According to him, the programme, newly implemented by the ministry, builds on the success of previous editions, the last of which was held in Miri.
This year, he said, Sarikei was selected as the host, with plans to expand the programme to Kuching, Sri Aman, Sibu, and Bintulu in the near future to involve more students and communities.
“A total of RM350,000 has been approved for upgrading works at the Sarikei Traffic Park, as part of enhancements to six traffic parks across Sarawak,” he said during the opening ceremony of the Sarikei Division Sarawak Traffic Games 2025 held recently.
He added that the Sarawak Traffic Games carry three main objectives, including to increase awareness of road regulations, to encourage engagement through interactive traffic simulations, and to empower students to become road safety ambassadors in their schools and communities.
A total of five primary schools and five secondary schools took part in this year’s edition.
He also expressed appreciation to Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii for his contribution of bicycles and pedal karts to enhance facilities in Sarikei.
As part of the programme, a Road Safety Speech Competition was held on April 23 and 25, involving 23 primary school students and 8 secondary school students, aimed at fostering critical thinking and communication skills among students.
He also called on all road users to always observe speed limits and practise responsible driving.
