SIBU: The construction of a car parking area costing RM90,000 at Rumah Joseph Jarrau longhouse in Tanjung Bekakap here has been successfully completed.
Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch’s Chairman, Cr Kevin Lau Kor Jie, led a team to the site on Thursday for a completion inspection.
The parking area, approximately 100 metres long, was built under the Bawang Assan Rural Transformation Project (RTP) special fund.
Lau said the car park was a long-standing and urgent need for the longhouse residents.
Since the longhouse chief submitted the application, Lau and the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) team had made several visits to the site for surveys and planning discussions, while actively seeking funding from the relevant departments to implement the project.
“From the initial application to the project’s completion, our team has been closely monitoring its progress,” Lau said.
“During our inspection, we also found certain portions that still require repair, and I have asked the contractor to complete these as soon as possible to ensure the facility is safe and durable.”
He added that the completion of the parking lot will greatly ease the parking shortage in front of the longhouse, providing residents and visitors with a safer and more convenient parking environment.
Lau also thanked the SRDC engineering team, the contractor, and the residents for their cooperation during construction, which enabled the project to be completed smoothly.
Lau, who is also SUPP Central Youth’s chief, urged residents to work together to maintain the cleanliness and safety of the public facility so that the parking lot can continue to benefit the local community in the long term.
Expressing his gratitude on behalf of the residents, Tuai Rumah Joseph Jarrau said the completion of the parking lot has solved a practical problem faced by the longhouse for many years and will help ease traffic congestion, especially during festive seasons.
Accompanying Lau during the inspection were SRDC’s assistant engineer, Ian Adib Haslan, Cr Johnny Ganing, Cr Wong Sing Ing, Cr Jeksen Chuban, and Penghulu Wong Ung.
Meanwhile, Lau and his team also inspected the Jalan Yong Kok upgrade project site at Engkilo.
He said the road upgrade, divided into two phases and spanning approximately 95 metres, was funded through the Bawang Assan RTP special fund and has now been fully completed, providing local residents with a safer and more comfortable driving environment.
