SERIAN: Construction for the new longhouse at Kampung Krusen Siu here has officially begun, marking a fresh start for eight families who lost their homes in a fire last year.
The RM540,000 reconstruction project is funded under the Sarawak Government’s Bantuan Ehsan Kebakaran Rumah (BEKR) programme, following approval by the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
Tebedu Assemblyman, Dr Simon Sinang Bada, said the project reflects the government’s concern for rural communities affected by disasters.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to the Sarawak Government, particularly SDMC, for their swift approval.
“This effort ensures that all eight families will have a proper place to call home again,” he said at the contract handover event at the Kampung Krusen Siu community hall today.
Simon expressed hope that the project will be completed before the Gawai Dayak celebration in 2026 so the families can celebrate in comfort and safety.
Deputy State Secretary (Administration), Datuk Buckland Bangik, who was present, stressed the importance of timely execution, saying that each longhouse unit would cost around RM70,000.
“This is a meaningful allocation by the Sarawak Government. I hope the completed homes will offer a safe and comfortable living environment for the families involved,” he said.
He also reminded the contractor and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) to work closely with implementing agencies and ensure consistent monitoring throughout the project.
“There should be no excuses. Once a project is awarded, it must be implemented immediately and without failure. Any contractor who fails to deliver within the specified timeline will be blacklisted,” he stressed.
