SARIKEI: Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Petai here has been equipped with a new multi-purpose court, funded through a RM180,000 allocation under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) by Sarikei Member of Parliament, Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii.
According to the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Deputy Minister, the initiative was aimed at enhancing basic facilities in rural schools to benefit not only the students and staff but also the surrounding community.
He also said that quality sports facilities are essential to developing a generation of students who are healthy, disciplined and competitive.
“This multi-purpose court will serve not only as a venue for sports but also as a platform to cultivate teamwork, strengthen identity, and nurture leadership and sportsmanship among students,” he said.
His remarks were delivered by his representative, Gung Chiu Kion, during the official launch event held at the school recently.
Huang expressed confidence that the facility would bring significant and positive impact to the school as it could be used for sports training, co-curricular activities, and recreational purposes.
“This construction symbolises the joint commitment of the school and the local community in ensuring our students holistic development – academically, physically, mentally and socially,” he said.
He also conveyed his appreciation to the Sarawak Government, particularly to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg for his continued support in upgrading rural education infrastructure, especially through the 2023 RTP allocation.
Huang then urged both educators and students to make full use of the new facility, not only to boost physical fitness but also to strengthen friendships and engage in beneficial activities that promote overall well-being.
