SARATOK: Efforts to strengthen rural education infrastructure received a boost with the official opening of the Nanga Apan Bridge at Sekolah Kebangsaan Ulu Kabo, here.
The bridge, which improves access and safety for students and the local community, was officiated by Krian assembylman Friday Belik on Wednesday (Apr 29).
In his speech, Friday stressed that infrastructure development plays a vital role in improving access to education while narrowing the development gap between urban and rural areas.
“The Sarawak government remains committed to providing various free education initiatives, including support programmes and assistance for students, to ensure no child is left behind in receiving quality education,” he said.
Friday also reaffirmed his commitment to safeguarding the welfare of the people, particularly those in rural communities, in line with the state’s inclusive development agenda.
For the record, the original bridge at the site was severed and damaged due to severe flooding on Jan 19 last year thus disrupting daily access for students and villagers.
Reconstruction works were subsequently carried out and completed on Feb 10 this year, with the new bridge coming into use on Mar 2.
The rebuilt structure is seen as a crucial initiative to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and residents, who previously faced difficulties crossing the river, especially during the rainy season and periods of strong currents.
Also present were Sarawak Education director Omar Mahli, members of the local community, and parents.
