KUCHING: A new parking area is expected to be constructed around the Semarak Hawker Centre here to accommodate the needs of visitors in the area.
Tupong state assemblyman, Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman, said the move follows the fact that most of the existing parking spaces there are currently being used as trading spots by local residents.
He added that discussions will be held with Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) to identify a suitable site to be developed into a proper parking area.
“This issue was only recently brought to my attention, and we will hold discussions to find a suitable location to build a more comfortable parking facility.
“We need proper planning first, and only then will we expand it to meet the needs of customers at the surrounding stalls,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after officiating at the opening ceremony of the Semarak Ramadan Bazaar in Gita here today.
According to Fazzrudin, he is aware of complaints from shop operators who said their customers are facing difficulties finding parking spaces, as most of the existing lots are already occupied by small traders.
“Therefore, we will first try to identify a suitable nearby site to make it easier for visitors to come here (to the stalls),” he explained.
Meanwhile, parking spaces around the area have been used by small-scale traders operating at the parking bays.
As such, traders at the hawker centre have raised the issue, urging for more parking spaces to be provided for visitors in the future.
