KUCHING: A centralised pineapple processing factory is set to be established in Tarat to strengthen the agricultural value chain and provide new income opportunities for local farmers in southern Sarawak.

Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn said the proposed facility will complement an existing processing plant in the Central Region, ensuring better coverage and support for pineapple growers in the southern belt.

“There is already a processing plant in the Central Region, and the plant here will cater to the southern region,” he said, adding that his intention is to develop the Tarat facility into a centralised hub where pineapple planters can sell their raw produce and generate steady income.

Sagah noted that the project will be implemented in collaboration with the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM), which has agreed to provide technical support and guidance.

To expedite implementation, he has asked the Siburan Farmers’ Organisation (FO) to spearhead the project, including the establishment of the processing plant and the development of alternative access roads to connect the facility.

A total of RM5 million has been allocated for the project under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA), and to be implemented by the state Agriculture Department.

However, Sagah acknowledged that progress has been slower than expected, largely due to challenges beyond their control, including delays in identifying a suitable site.

The proposed location is expected to be somewhere between Siburan and Tarat.

“The easiest way to implement this project is for Siburan FO to purchase shop lots, as it is faster and more practical,” he said, reiterating that the allocated RM5 million can be utilised for this purpose.

He also expressed concern over delays caused by a lack of urgency among certain parties, noting that such setbacks complicate efforts to deliver timely benefits to farmers.

Sagah noted that during discussions with elected representatives under GKCDA, a consensus was reached that pineapple farmers from Bidayuh villages in Serian, Penrissen and Bau would be able to supply their harvests to the future facility.

Sagah added that while coffee cultivation initiatives are being pursued in Bayur, Mambong, he will focus on developing the pineapple industry in Tarat to maximise regional agricultural potential.
