KUCHING: Sarawak has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the state’s economy through the newly introduced Sarawak State Ownership Policy.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the policy was designed to optimise natural resources and diversify Sarawak’s economic base in a sustainable manner.

“With clear principles and frameworks, the Sarawak government can act as an active, professional and credible partner in asset management.

“This initiative is the first of its kind in the country, supported by economists and the World Bank,” he said during the parade held in conjunction with the 79th official birthday of the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Padang Merdeka last Saturday.

Abang Johari gave assurance that state development policies would continue to reflect current needs, including the digital economy, green energy and human capital development.

He also stressed that Sarawak was enhancing its capacity to determine its own policies in key areas such as education and health.

He added that the initiative was in line with efforts to uphold Sarawak’s rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

“As a result of these efforts, Sarawak now has regulatory authority over liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), an important energy resource.

“Through our state-owned company, Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (PETROS), we are now able to manage our own resources,” he said.

With greater autonomy in these areas, Abang Johari expressed confidence that Sarawak would continue driving inclusive and sustainable development, especially for communities in rural and interior regions.

He also said Sarawak has entered a new phase of economic growth built on innovation, technology and sustainability.

“Infrastructure for technology is being strengthened with the construction of data centres, communication towers and fibre optic networks across Sarawak.

“Today, more Sarawakians are venturing into artificial intelligence, green technology, e-commerce and smart agriculture.

“Our aspiration is for Sarawakians not only to be consumers, but also creators of value in the digital economy,” he said.
