KUCHING: A new road, linking Miri to Marudi, Long Terawan, Long Panai and ultimately Mulu, is expected to be completed by 2029, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said the road, if completed by then, would mean a journey of only one and a half hours to reach Mulu.
“Right now we have a new road here in Long Terawan. Long Terawan is very new. This is part of the state budget. We are going to build a road from Miri to Marudi, then to Long Terawan, Long Panai, and finally to Mulu.
“Mulu will then be connected to another road in Gunung Buda, in Limbang. So we will have a new road that will open up the entire Baram area.
“If you go to Mulu, hopefully by 2029, if it is completed by then, it will only take one and a half hours to reach Mulu,” said Abang Johari.
He stated this during a forum session ‘A Moment with the Premier of Sarawak – The 2026 Sarawak Budget Aspiration: Empowering the Future of Sarawak’ at the 2026 Sarawak Budget Conference at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
He also highlighted the potential boost for tourism and accessibility in the remote region. Currently, travel to Mulu is lengthy, causing some tourists to even miss flights.
“At the moment, it takes much longer to travel to Mulu, and tourists sometimes even miss their flights. By opening up this remote area, we will eventually provide water supply there, which will cost over three billion.
“This is under the state budget. We plan to connect remote areas. Limbang-Lawas-Ba’kelalan-Bario and the state park will also be connected.
“Eventually, it will link Sabah and Sarawak. In other words, Sarawak’s remote areas will be connected by 2030,” he concluded.
