KUCHING: Sarawak’s role as host for the 2027 SEA Games gymnastics event takes a leap forward with the recent Asian Gymnastics Union (AGU) Executive Meeting agreeing to new rules designed to develop younger gymnasts and strengthen Malaysia’s competitive edge.
The landmark meeting, held in Kuching for the first time in Malaysia’s history, saw the Malaysian Gymnastics Federation (MGF) and AGU members come together to discuss and approve significant changes ahead of the 2027 SEA Games.
MGF President Kau Git Kaur expressed his enthusiasm about the event and the cooperation from the Sarawak Government and local gymnastics community.
“Although it required considerable investment, hosting the AGU meeting in Sarawak was absolutely worth it,” he said.
“We are very happy with the outcome, particularly the agreement on new competition rules that will benefit young athletes across the region,” he told Sarawak Tribune at a Cruise Dinner in conjunction with the AGU Executive Meeting 2026 at Royal Kuching Cruise, Waterfront recently.
One of the main initiatives agreed upon is lowering the age requirement for the junior group. This move aims to provide younger gymnasts with earlier access to high-level platforms, allowing for a smoother transition and greater experience over time.
“Generation after generation, it is vital to allow youths to enter high-level platforms sooner. This will greatly benefit Malaysia, especially as the host country,” Kau said.
However, he also cautioned about the physical readiness of very young athletes, especially boys who have yet to complete puberty.
“Training in high-difficulty skills too early could negatively affect their overall development if their bodies are not fully prepared,” he explained.
The meeting also highlighted the progress of Sarawak in gymnastics development.
While traditionally states like Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have dominated artistic gymnastics, Sarawak is steadily catching up. Currently, it has athletes in the national team, a sign of promising potential for the state.
“Beyond training intensity, other crucial aspects like medical support, equipment upgrades, overseas training, and exposure to international competitions must be enhanced to sustain this growth,” Kau emphasised.
Sarawak Amateur Gymnastics Association (SAGYMA) President Johnny Tan Seng Hock also received praise for his full cooperation in making the AGU Executive Meeting a success.
“I would like to thank the Sarawak president, Johnny, for his full cooperation and also express our sincere gratitude to Sarawak Sports Corporation for their strong support which made it possible for this meeting to be held in Kuching, Sarawak,” he said.
Also in attendance at the dinner was Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak, Kho Teck Wan, who is also SAGYMA patron.
