SIBU: The Sibu Autistic Association (SAA) is constructing a new RM6.5 million building to accommodate the rising number of children diagnosed with autism in the central region.

SAA chairman David Ngu highlighted the increasing prevalence of autism, noting that cases have grown from 70 in 2019 to 152 in 2023.

“Our current facility at Agape Centre can only accommodate 50 children at a time, which is no longer sufficient.

“There is an urgent need for a larger space to provide proper support and services,” he said at the project award and agreement signing ceremony with contractor Happiwin Development Sdn Bhd on Friday.

The new building, located next to Agape Centre in Jalan Alan, here will accommodate up to 200 children and the construction is expected to be completed within 15 months.

Children at the centre will receive early intervention therapy and participate in a structured schooling programme.

Ngu estimated that there are around 1,000 children with autism in the central region.

“Many children who have undergone early intervention programmes can now integrate well into the community. One of them was even named the best student in his class,” he said.

Ngu expressed gratitude to Sibu Community Service Association chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King for granting permission to use the land for the new facility.

Meanwhile, Tiong commended SAA, established in 2000, for its dedication to providing early intervention programmes for children with autism.

“SAA understands the importance of early intervention. Over the years, you have worked tirelessly to help children connect with the world.

“We have witnessed their progress, overcoming communication barriers step by step. Behind these small miracles is the dedication and perseverance of the association’s team,” he said.

He also acknowledged SAA’s efforts in not only providing therapy but also building a support network for parents, organising workshops on home intervention, and advocating for government assistance.

“It is exciting that the new education building will feature modern facilities, including specialised classrooms, therapy rooms, and recreational areas. This will significantly enhance the quality of services and provide greater benefits for the children,” he added.
