BETONG: The construction of the new Sarawak Contingent Police Headquarters (IPK) is expected to begin next year.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said approval for the project was announced under the 2026 Federal Budget.

“We are grateful that the construction of the new Sarawak IPK was announced in the 2026 Federal Budget. God willing, it may be implemented next year,” he told the media after the Betong District Police Chief (KPD) Promotion and Handover Ceremony today (Dec 8).

When asked about plans to add new District Police Headquarters (IPDs) and police stations ahead of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) starting next year, he confirmed that plans are in motion.

“The focus will be especially on some IPDs that we see frequently experience flooding, however, we will also review them, including older police stations, with an emphasis on upgrading their facilities and buildings.

“I am thankful to the federal and Sarawak governments for their continuous support, such as the recent assistance to repaint and repair old buildings,” he said.

Regarding asset shortages at IPDs, Zainal admitted that more assets and facilities are still needed to improve the efficiency of daily police work.

“Today I visited IPD Betong, the fourth IPD I have visited since leading the Sarawak police. This shows we are still assessing asset needs, which we will request from the Federal and Sarawak governments. After reviewing these needs, I will coordinate priorities across all 28 districts in Sarawak that require additional assets due to old or unusable facilities,” he added.
