SIBU: A new direct flight route between Sibu and Paro, Bhutan, is set to take off on August 25, in a move that is expected to support the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign and enhance ties between the two countries.

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the route will serve as a catalyst for cultural exchange and economic growth, in line with the government’s MADANI principles of harmony, honesty, and innovation.

“This new flight reflects these values. It will help us share our cultures and learn from each other. It will also play an important role in achieving this goal by bringing more visitors from Bhutan to Sarawak, while also giving our people a chance to visit Bhutan,” he said.

He said this in his text speech read by his representative, Malaysia Tourism Promotion Board deputy director general (Promotion II) Samuel Lee, at the MoU signing ceremony between Bhutan Airlines and Sak Soon Travel Agencies Sdn Bhd at a renowned hotel here today (Apr 26).

The MoU signing by Ugyen Tenzin from Bhutan Airlines and Thomas Tan from Sak Soon Travel Agencies Sdn Bhd was witnessed by Lee, representing Tiong, and Tourism Bhutan chief marketing officer Karma Wangdi, who represented Bhutan.

Tiong also emphasised that the MoU signing ceremony marks a major step forward in improving air travel and strengthening connections between the two nations.

“We are not just starting a new route; we are creating a bridge between our two rich cultures. This partnership demonstrates our commitment to growing tourism, trade, and economic opportunities, and it brings our people closer together,” he said.

Meanwhile, Karma Wangdi said the addition of the Sibu route, following the existing Penang and Kuala Lumpur flights, offers Bhutan a new opportunity.

“Malaysia has emerged as a promising tourism market for Bhutan, not only due to the increasing number of Malaysian travelers to Bhutan but also because of its strategic location in Southeast Asia, particularly Borneo Island.

“This will obviously make travel from Sibu to Bhutan much easier and more comfortable for Malaysians who wish to visit Bhutan,” he added.

He expressed confidence that this new air route will serve as a strong platform for enhancing relations between Malaysia and Bhutan—not only through tourism and investment, but more importantly, by fostering people-to-people connections.
