LAWAS: Residents here will enjoy a more stable water supply with the construction of a new water treatment plant in Sungai Lawas Damit.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said this project will benefit residents around Long Tuma up to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Merapok.

In addition, it should open up opportunities for coverage expansion to Kampung Long Sukang and surrounding areas through a reticulation system.

He added that this plant will complement the function of the Trusan Water Treatment Plant which is currently the main source of water supply in the district.

According to him, it will be operated by the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) as the implementing agency, thus strengthening the government’s ability to ensure better access to clean water for the community.

“This new plant will help increase water supply capacity in line with infrastructure development, especially roads.

“With the allocation having been received and technical studies having been conducted, we expect this project to be started this year,” he said.

Awang Tengah attended the launching of ‘Rumah Mampu Milik Skim Pembesaran Kampung’ (SPK) Trusan here today.

In another development, Awang Tengah said Trusan will undergo redevelopment to make it a major stopover destination in northern Sarawak.

According to him, Trusan has great potential to grow as a trading hub, when the Northern Coastal Highway that will pass through the town, is completed.

“As a step towards supporting development in this area, a new bridge will be built to increase access and facilitate the smooth movement of residents and traders.

“Various new facilities will be provided, including modern business premises, markets, and a more organised trading area, to ensure sustainable economic growth.

“We want Trusan to develop as a modern town, but at the same time maintain its original identity and uniqueness.

“With careful planning, we are confident that it will not only become an important economic centre, but also a new attraction for tourists,” he added
