WELLINGTON: New Zealand announced on Wednesday that it will introduce a citizenship test from late 2027 to strengthen requirements for applicants seeking citizenship by grant, reported Xinhua.

The new measure would require applicants to demonstrate “sufficient knowledge of the responsibilities and privileges of being a citizen” through an in-person, multiple-choice test, according to a government statement.

Applicants will need to achieve a score of at least 75 per cent to pass. Currently, applicants meet the requirement by signing a declaration confirming their understanding of citizenship obligations.

Citizenship by grant is one of three New Zealand citizenship pathways, alongside by birth and descent.

Individuals who were born outside of New Zealand and have met the presence requirements can obtain New Zealand citizenship by grant.

The Department of Internal Affairs will develop study materials and guidance ahead of implementation, the statement said. – BERNAMA-XINHUA
