KUCHING: Newcastle United claimed their first major domestic trophy since 1969 with a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed a historic win for Eddie Howe’s side, ending a decades-long wait for silverware on Monday.

The Magpies struck first just before half-time, with Burn towering above the Liverpool defence to head home from Kieran Trippier’s corner.

Isak doubled the lead in the 53rd minute, pouncing on a defensive error to slot past Caoimhín Kelleher. Liverpool, struggling to break down a disciplined Newcastle backline, pulled one back late on through Federico Chiesa, but it proved too little, too late.

Arne Slot’s side, chasing a record-extending 10th League Cup, found themselves frustrated by Newcastle’s intensity.

Mohamed Salah was kept quiet, while Nick Pope produced crucial saves to deny Darwin Núñez and Cody Gakpo.

Overwhelmed by the club’s first major trophy win (and his first for the Magpies), Howe said: “I’ve been emotional all day long to honest, which is unlike on game day – We just knew what was at stake here today (March 17).

“And for all of the people back in Newcastle, we just wanted to make them proud.

“We were desperate to try and try to win the trophy – after all these years of hurt – and I am not only pleased with the results and performance, but I just thought we deserved to win today,” Howe said in a post-match interview with Sky Sports.

The final whistle sparked jubilant celebrations among Newcastle’s travelling supporters, who have waited decades for a moment like this. Howe’s men lifted the trophy under the Wembley arch, marking what could be the start of a new era for the North East club.

For Liverpool, the attention now turns to their Premier League title push, while Newcastle celebrate their triumph.
