KUCHING: The newly inaugurated headquarters of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Wisma Lestari, is set to become a benchmark for green infrastructure in Sarawak.

SFC general manager Abang Arabi Abang Aimran said that the building integrates renewable energy solutions as part of the corporation’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint through tangible and sustainable efforts.

Named by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg in November last year, the name ‘Lestari’—which signifies sustainability and continuity—embodies SFC’s mission in conservation.

“Wisma Lestari stands as a testament to this dedication, serving as a center for research, collaboration, and sustainable initiatives that will shape Sarawak’s conservation efforts for generations to come.

“Wisma Lestari is more than just bricks and mortar; it represents a vision for sustainability—a vision that begins with small steps, such as using solar energy to power the parking lot lights and illuminating the SFC name and logo at the top of the building.

“These initiatives may seem modest, but they symbolize our aspiration to take greater strides toward sustainability,” he said.

He said this during the official opening of Wisma Lestari at SFC’s premises in Jalan Sungai Tapang, Kota Sentosa, today.

In line with its commitment to conservation, Abang Arabi asserted that SFC is also enhancing its wildlife forensic capabilities.

He revealed that Wisma Lestari houses the Sarawak Wildlife Forensic (SWIF) Lab, located on the ground floor within the Flora & Fauna Forensic and Genetic Resources Bank.

This facility aims to achieve national and international recognition through advanced conservation and sustainable practices.

With an expanded forensic capacity, the lab will strengthen efforts to combat illegal activities such as wildlife trafficking, threats to endangered species, and other environmental crimes.

“At present, our lab operates with limited capacity, restricting the scope of forensic investigations we can conduct.

“However, with additional state support and funding, we can significantly enhance our capabilities.

“A fully equipped forensic facility would allow us to conduct more comprehensive DNA analysis, improve species identification, and strengthen evidence collection for legal proceedings,” he added.

Looking ahead, Abang Arabi expressed SFC’s vision of making Wisma Lestari fully powered by renewable energy, setting an example for sustainable practices in Sarawak.
