KUCHING: Ngap Sayot legend, Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed, believes Kuching City FC have what it takes to upset Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the Malaysia Cup final despite the Southern Tigers’ superiority on paper.
The former Sarawak coach said JDT remain the strongest side in Malaysian football based on structure, squad depth and the quality of their foreign imports, but stressed that finals are often decided by mentality and determination.
“JDT are strong. Kuching are also quite good. I think both are strong,” he told Sarawak Tribune recently.
Awang Mahyan said Kuching City should not be underestimated if they approach the match with confidence and hard work.
“In football, Kuching can beat JDT. At least they must work hard because JDT are already an established and very strong team,” he said.
The 76-year-old added that Kuching City’s biggest strength could be their fighting spirit and motivation heading into one of the biggest matches in the club’s history.
“Since they are in the final, I hope Kuching can overcome JDT. I pray they can do it in the final.
“Even though JDT have many foreign players, we don’t know. With spirit and a new approach, Kuching can still win,” he said.
Awang Mahyan predicted a narrow victory for the Cats if they can match JDT’s intensity.
“I think Kuching can win, maybe 2-1. They must play well and with full commitment,” he said.
He also recalled Sarawak’s 1990 Malaysia Cup semi-final defeat to Kedah at Kallang Stadium in Singapore, a campaign widely regarded as one of the defining moments of the Ngap Sayot era.
According to him, discipline, organisation and fighting spirit will be key if Kuching City are to challenge the reigning Malaysian football powerhouse.
“Football is not easy, but if you play with full spirit and determination, anything can happen,” he added.
