KUCHING: A family of six living in a squatter settlement in Siol Kandis, Petra Jaya, is facing mounting hardship after the family matriarch became bedridden following a stroke late last year.

Kinta Meran, 63, suffered a partial stroke in October and was hospitalised for several months before being discharged earlier this month.

The stroke has left her unable to speak or move, requiring full-time care at home.

Due to her condition, the family sought assistance from non-governmental organisation Hope Place Kuching after struggling to cope financially and emotionally.

Kinta now relies on tube feeding and requires specialised milk supplements every three hours  in addition to adult diapers and basic medical care.

Her daughter, Suzanna, 40, is her primary caregiver while also trying to supplement the household income through part-time work at a home-based bakery producing ‘kek lapis’.

Suzanna’s husband, Stevin, works as a RELA guard on a daily-wage basis, while their three children, aged between six and 17, are still schooling.

The family lives in a makeshift wooden house in a squatter area, with limited access to basic amenities.

Concerned about Kinta’s living conditions and health, a social worker from Klinik Kesihatan Petrajaya referred the case to Hope Place.

The NGO is currently assisting the family with supplies of adult diapers and milk supplements.

Hope Place, also known as Persatuan Kebajikan Harapan Kuching (PKHK), continues to support families in need across Kuching and surrounding areas.

Those interested in assisting may contact Hope Place at 082-505987 or 013-5672775.

Donations may be made via MBB 511289001160 or through its Facebook page using Sarawak Pay or SPAY GLOBAL.

A benefactor donates a medical bed to Kinta, delivering it to the family’s home.
