KUCHING: The night service counter opened by Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Kuching Branch at the premises of Life Cafe here received an encouraging response from the local community.

A survey by Sarawak Tribune at the location on Thursday found that members of the public, especially youth and adults, had begun queuing in front of the premises as early as 5.30 pm.

SUPP Kuching Youth chief Nicholas Wung, said that the night counter, being held for the first time, received a positive response.

“We see a very good response from the public regarding the opening of this night service counter.

“In fact, we officially start at 6 pm but we could already see people gathering as early as 5 pm,” he said when met by reporters at the location.

According to him, many students came with their parents to fill in and get more information about the Special Financial Aid worth RM1,200 for Sarawak students studying at institutions of higher learning (IPT) throughout Malaysia.

He mentioned that cooperation with local leaders such as penghulu and kapitan, who were also present at the counter, helped facilitate the students’ document filling process.

“Young people certainly have no problem filling in the information as it is quite easy, but what they need are signatures or official stamps from the kapitan.

“So for applicants who attend, they should bring along their parents’ identification cards, parents’ salary slips, and confirmation letters from their universities,” he added.

Seeing the positive response from the community, he plans to continue this initiative (service counter) in the future.

He explained that the decision to open the counter from evening until 9 pm proved to be the right choice, especially for the youth in the area.

“This counter was only scheduled for Thursday, but for those who missed it, they are most welcome to contact us so that we can go down to assist them.

“So the proposal to continue this counter in the future will depend on the upcoming response. If it’s still encouraging, we will carry it out again,” he said.
