MIRI: Nine people tested positive for methamphetamine while eight vehicles were seized during a multi-agency enforcement operation in Miri on Thursday (July 9) as authorities intensified efforts to curb traffic offences, drug abuse and other unlawful activities.

The operations, led by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) Sarawak through its Miri Operations Unit with support from the JPJ Enforcement Station in Skaloh, was carried out along Jalan Miri Bypass in both directions.

Officers from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) and the Immigration Department (JIM) also took part.

A total of 450 vehicles were inspected during the operations, with enforcement officers uncovering a range of offences, including the use of non-compliant HID and LED lighting systems, driving without a valid licence, expired driving licences, registration plates that failed to meet legal specifications, and other technical breaches under the Road Transport Act.

Eight vehicles were impounded for various offences. They included motorcycles and private cars with expired road tax and no valid insurance, as well as vehicles driven by foreign nationals without valid driving licences.

Meanwhile, AADK screened 12 individuals during the operations, with nine returning positive results for methamphetamine.

The individuals have been referred to the agency for further action in accordance with existing legislation.

No immigration offences were detected during the operations.

JPJ Sarawak said the operations underscored the importance of close collaboration between enforcement agencies in tackling road safety violations and related offences.

The department added that similar integrated operations would continue to strengthen compliance with transport laws, deter illegal activities and improve road safety across Sarawak.
