KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council is intensifying efforts to manage traffic congestion as major infrastructure projects accelerate across the rapidly developing township.
Chairman Abang Ismawi Abang Ali said the council has engaged Sarawak Metro and contractors to better coordinate construction schedules, particularly during peak commuting hours.
“We have requested authorities and contractors to avoid construction during peak hours such as 9 am and 4.30 pm,” he said.
He stressed that the move aims to ensure smoother daily commutes for residents while allowing development works to continue without severely disrupting traffic flow.
Abang Ismawi acknowledged that ongoing construction activities have contributed to congestion, describing traffic management as a persistent concern requiring continuous monitoring and coordination among relevant agencies.
“Although many projects are underway, traffic remains a significant issue that we must address carefully to minimise inconvenience to the public,” he added.
He noted that the implementation of the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system may temporarily worsen congestion but is expected to provide long-term relief once operational.
“The situation has improved, but we hope the ART project will further reduce traffic congestion and improve overall connectivity in Kota Samarahan,” he said.
Abang Ismawi shared these remarks when met by reporters during a Hari Raya Open House, where community leaders and residents gathered to celebrate the festive occasion.
He highlighted that Kota Samarahan is experiencing rapid growth, supported by infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving connectivity, accessibility, and the overall image of the township.
Among key developments are new bridges linking rural villages, expanded road networks, and major institutional projects that are expected to boost socio-economic growth in the area.
“Projects like bridge construction and planned road systems will significantly enhance mobility while supporting ongoing urbanisation across Kota Samarahan,” he explained.
He also pointed to the upcoming Green Park development, spanning 1,000 hectares, as a transformative project expected to create new opportunities for housing, business, and investment.
“With these developments, we are working hard to ensure smooth implementation and a better living environment for residents,” he said, adding that collaboration remains crucial.
