KUCHING: The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) has assured that there is no shortage of fuel supply nationwide, despite isolated concerns over availability at certain petrol stations.

Its director-general Datuk Azman Adam said the government is closely monitoring fuel distribution and demand patterns daily, stressing that current supply levels remain sufficient.

“So far, we do not have any issue of supply shortage in the country. Consumers need not worry,” he said during a press conference after a walkabout compliance inspection at a petrol station in Bau today (Apr 1).

He explained that temporary shortages at certain locations may occur due to factors such as increased demand during festive seasons, including Hari Raya, or logistical delays like tanker deliveries caused by traffic congestion.

Azman added that any reported supply disruption would be thoroughly investigated, including checks on station records and closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage to determine the root cause.

On enforcement, he warned that stern action would be taken against parties found abusing the fuel supply system under the Control of Supplies Act.

“For a first offence, individuals can be fined up to RM1 million or jailed for up to three years, while companies can be fined up to RM2 million,” he said, adding that investigations may also be conducted under the Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA).

He emphasised that the strict measures reflect the government’s commitment to safeguarding subsidised fuel, which is meant exclusively for Malaysians.

According to him, the government is currently bearing a high fuel subsidy cost, estimated at between RM4 billion and RM5 billion per month, driven by rising global demand, particularly due to the situation in West Asia.

“This subsidy is for Malaysians, and it should not be misused by any party for personal gain,” he said.

Azman said continued cooperation between enforcement agencies, industry players and the public is crucial to ensure that fuel supply remains stable and protected from leakages or misuse.
