No tsunami threat following earthquake in Mindanao

KUCHING: There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia following a moderate earthquake of magnitude 5.2 which struck Mindanao in the Philippines this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) reported that the earthquake occurred at 6:26 am and was located at coordinates 5.3° north, 126.2° east, approximately 140 kilometres (km) north of Talaud Island in Indonesia.

The earthquake had a depth of 60 km.

“However, there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,” MetMalaysia said in a statement.

Earlier in January this year, a similar earthquake also occurred in Mindanao.
