KUCHING: Sarawak Orchid Society (Sarorso) patron, Dayang Norjihan, daughter of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, made her first visit to the orchid laboratory and mini orchid garden at MARA Junior Science College (MRSM) Kuching today.
The visit centred on the Juma’ani In Vitro Orchid Micropropagation (JIVOM) project, a collaboration between MRSM Kuching and the orchid society aimed at conserving endangered local orchid species.
Deputy Principal of Talent Development at MRSM Kuching, McManus Sing, said the project was an important initiative that also gave students hands-on experience in research and innovation.
“MRSM Kuching is honoured to be chosen as the pioneer of this project. What makes us proud is that the entire propagation and care process is carried out by the students themselves in the MRSM Kuching Orchid Laboratory,” he said.
So far, three groups of students have been involved, and they are expected to represent Malaysia at an international programme in Germany next year to present their findings.

He added that Norjihan’s visit provided motivation to the school community, especially students involved in the STEM-based innovation project.
“She visited the orchid garden, which houses over 80 species including endangered ones, before touring the orchid laboratory.
“This visit is hoped to open more opportunities to expand the students’ innovation project globally,” he added.
Launched at MRSM Kuching, the JIVOM project has become the only laboratory in Malaysia conducting systematic orchid micropropagation.
It is in line with MRSM’s focus on developing students’ potential holistically through academics, leadership, innovation and entrepreneurship.
