KUCHING: Normah Medical Specialist Centre (NMSC) reinforced its reputation as a leading stroke centre by hosting the inaugural Interventional Radiology Seminar 2025 today, attracting more than 100 healthcare practitioners from across the region.

The event, held in conjunction with the International Day of Radiology, focused on early stroke detection, intervention, and the latest advances in minimally invasive treatment.

During the event, NMSC’s Clinical Director of Radiology, Dr Wong Koh Ping, highlighted the centre’s pioneering role in interventional radiology in Sarawak.

“Our commitment began 30 years ago with the establishment of the cardiovascular lab in 1995.

“Early angiograms and embolisations were often performed for patients from Sarawak General Hospital when local resources were scarce,” he said.

Dr Wong also recalled the centre’s milestone achievement in 2001, when it performed the first middle cerebral artery thrombolysis using TPA, a clot-dissolving medication that restores blood flow to the brain during a stroke, on a 38-year-old patient.

Dr Wong emphasised the critical role of teamwork in stroke care, noting that successful outcomes require coordinated efforts from interventional radiologists, emergency physicians, nurses and radiographers.

The seminar featured leading specialists, including Consultant Neurologist Dr Law Wan Chung, Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr Mohd Iryan Che Othman, Neurointerventional Radiologist Dr Bibi Sadaqat, and Consultant Radiologist Dr Phyllis Ho, who shared expertise on acute stroke assessment, surgical and endovascular interventions, and advanced imaging techniques.

Organised in collaboration with GE HealthCare and supported by Fujifilm, Toyo Adtec, Cas Medic, and Pharmaco Healthcare, the seminar also provided a platform for practitioners to exchange knowledge on cutting-edge radiology and interventional procedures.
