KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng has urged the public not to make the Chinese New Year dressing of a cat statue here during the Christmas season into an issue.

He said MBKS respected all festive celebrations and to dress up the cat statue in Padungan in Chinese New Year attire was in preparations of a festive song, which would be videoed and officially released on Jan 2, next year.

Nonetheless, he thanked everyone’s feedback.

“As we are doing our Chinese music video shooting with the white cat which is an icon in Padungan, we need to change the attire early so that we can launch the video on Jan 2, 2025.

“Now, if you go to any shopping malls, they are already playing the Chinese New Year song. Please do not make it into issue, we respect all festive celebrations,” he said.

The launching of the Chinese New Year song on Jan 2 is in preparation to welcome the Year of the Snake, with celebrations beginning on Jan 29 next year.

As for the musical fountain at Friendship Park at Jalan Song, with Chinese New year background songs, he said MBKS was conducting a test run before launching the musical dancing fountain, an art form that integrated waterscape, music and light.

“There is a necessity to check it so that the music will go with the flow before we launch it.

“If now I play Christmas songs, some people will make their remarks too, I am sure, but for the musical fountain, we are doing a test run,” said Wee, adding that the MBKS building’s lighting was still in Christmas colours.
