KUCHING: The one-off RM100 Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during his special address on Wednesday (July 23) has been welcomed as a thoughtful gesture by many Malaysians.

The initiative, which will be disbursed via MyKad by Aug 31 to every adult Malaysian, is part of the federal government’s ongoing efforts to ease the public’s burden amid the rising cost of living.

This is the first time such aid will be given directly to every adult Malaysian.

Following the announcement, Sarawak Tribune spoke to several Malaysians to get their views on the initiative.

Felecian Brunu, 34, the provisional branch head at TML Remittance, said that although the amount was not much, the initiative showed the government’s awareness of the financial strain many people were facing.

“It might not cover everything, but it eases some of the burden, especially for daily essentials like food or transport. Sometimes, that small relief is what helps you get through the week,” he said.

Felecian also agreed with the decision to distribute the aid on an individual basis.

“When it’s given individually, everyone gets their own share. Not everyone lives in the same household structure, so this feels fairer,” he added.

Meanwhile, business owner Aainaa Syazwani, 28, said financial aid was always welcome, especially for those who were less fortunate.

“It’s one of the best kinds of blessings. It may not be a lot, but it can definitely help with small but essential purchases like groceries, petrol or phone top-ups.

“For some, that RM100 means not having to choose between meals or transport for a few days,” she said.

She also said she preferred it being given individually, as it ensured everyone received something, especially those in shared or non-traditional households who might otherwise be overlooked.

When asked how she would spend the money, Aainaa said she would most likely use it on necessities.

“Maybe on groceries or to pay off a small bill. It’s not a windfall, but it can still ease the burden a little this month,” she said.

She also suggested that the aid be more targeted and distributed more regularly to low-income individuals or those who truly needed it.

“One-off blanket handouts are nice, but consistent, needs-based support would have a longer-term impact,” she said.

Public servant Mohamad Nazirul Haziq Mohamad Musa, 29, said the assistance could help families prepare for the upcoming school term in September.

“Even though it’s only RM100, it still has a positive impact on the people. With that RM100, we can at least buy rice and kitchen supplies.

“For those who have already received SARA assistance before, this is an added boost and helps reduce their burden, especially for those with many children or single mothers. Indirectly, it helps sustain daily life. Thank you, Prime Minister for your concern and appreciation toward the people,” he said.

He also welcomed the individual disbursement of the aid.

“When it’s given to individuals, they can plan what they really need to buy.

“For instance, if both parents receive the aid, it eases the load even if they have children over 18 who also need money, because the children receive it too,” he said.

Nazirul, who is originally from Saratok but works in Kuching, said he would likely use the aid for daily essentials.

“At least the money can help cover fuel costs and allow me to bring back some items for my family, especially since one of my younger siblings are still under 18,” he said.

He expressed hope that such initiatives would continue in the future.

“This kind of effort should be sustained. Provide the aid to those who truly need it, and where possible, continue to disburse it individually.

“May our country’s economy continue to grow strong and remain competitive,” he said.
