KUCHING: New South Wales (NSW) is showing a keen interest in strengthening its relationship with Sarawak, particularly in the areas of renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
Senior Trade Commissioner of New South Wales (NSW) Andrew James Parker said, as one of Australia’s leading states in the energy sector, NSW brings cutting-edge technological expertise and significant experience in harnessing renewable resources, such as solar, wind and hydroelectric power.
Parker acknowledged that Sarawak, known for its vast natural resources, is making significant strides toward embracing green energy.
He said the state boasts substantial untapped potential in hydropower, solar energy and biomass, positioning itself as a key player in the ASEAN region’s energy transition.
“Sarawak’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and transitioning to a low-carbon economy aligns seamlessly with New South Wales’ vision of fostering innovation in clean energy solutions.
“We recognise Sarawak’s immense potential in renewable energy, particularly in hydropower, and we see great opportunities for collaboration.
“New South Wales, with its advanced capabilities in green technologies, is eager to partner with Sarawak in advancing sustainable energy initiatives,” said Parker.
He said these during a courtesy visit to Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr. Hazland Abang Hipni recently.
Meanwhile, Dr. Hazland during the meeting emphasised Sarawak’s dedication to sustainable energy development.
He said Sarawak is making strategic efforts to develop its energy resources in line with global sustainability goals, enhancing energy access, reducing environmental impact, and positioning the state as a leader in renewable energy in Southeast Asia.
During the meeting, both parties discussed several avenues for collaboration, including the development of large-scale renewable energy projects, the exchange of expertise in energy storage technologies, and the promotion of green technology innovation.
In addition, both sides expressed interest in exploring opportunities for joint ventures, investments, and research partnerships in the green energy sector.
Dr. Hazland said this meeting marks an important step towards building stronger ties between NSW and Sarawak, particularly in the realm of green energy, where the two regions can leverage their respective strengths.
“Sarawak’s abundant natural resources, coupled with New South Wales’ cutting-edge green technologies, provide a solid foundation for a partnership that could significantly contribute towards achieving sustainable energy goals both regionally and globally,” he said.
