KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Supreme Council member Wilson Nyabong Ijang has officially announced his interest in the party presidency.
He will contest in the party elections during the upcoming Triennial Delegates Conference (TDC) in October.
Nyabong, who is also the Pelagus assemblyman, said the decision came after receiving encouragement from fellow Supreme Council members and strong backing from many PRS divisions across Sarawak.
“Whenever I go down to the grassroots, whether for official functions or to meet members in their areas, I always make time to be with them.
“They are my source of strength. I am ready to continue and enhance the political agenda set by our late founder, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, to ensure his legacy lives on and to bring PRS to greater heights,” he said in a statement today.
Nyabong, who has been with PRS since its formation, said he had the privilege of working closely with the late Masing, often consulting with him to understand the pulse of the people, party’s direction, the needs of the people and the dynamics of grassroots politics.
“The decision by the PRS Supreme Council on last Sunday (Aug 10) reflects the maturity of the party’s democratic process.
“From the start, PRS has practised open elections at every TDC as proof of our commitment to transparency and genuine democracy,” he said.
He added that the upcoming party polls would be conducted in the spirit of together and kinship, with unity as its foundation.
“After the election, we must remain united, close ranks, support one another and move forward to advance the party,” he said.
Nyabong said if given the mandate, he will remain steadfast in upholding the legacy of PRS’s founding struggle, which has always prioritised party unity, including strengthening relations with Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) component parties, as well as upholding the principles of justice and defending the rights of the people of Sarawak, particularly the Dayak community.
“I also call upon all PRS members to unite, strengthen our struggle and move forward together to ensure the continuity of the political agenda inspired by our founder.
“With unity and shared determination, PRS will remain relevant, strong and the primary platform for the people’s struggle in Sarawak,” he said.
