KUCHING: Persons with disabilities (OKU) should not be viewed as subjects of sympathy, but regarded as important assets, says Dayang Norjihan Abang Abdul Rahman Johari.
She said they must be given comprehensive opportunities to develop and showcase their abilities and strengths without pressure.
“My late mother once shared and reminded me that all humans are the same, with no differences.
“Throughout her life, she taught us never to live in comfort alone. She always brought us to see and understand the hardships faced by these groups and others,” she said in her speech during the closing ceremony of the OKU International Day celebration organised by the Sri Satok Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre (PPDK) at Plaza Merdeka, here yesterday (Dec 6).
Her presence, warmth and gracious interaction were said to have eased the longing felt by the trainees, their parents and PPDK Sri Satok staff for her late mother, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Jumaani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who served as the organisation’s patron and was a driving force closely connected with PPDK Sri Satok since its early days.
Dayang Norjihan extended her congratulations to the children, parents and PPDK Sri Satok staff involved in the various activities held in conjunction with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
She presented prizes to the winners of the colouring competition and contributed personal donations to them as well as other trainees present.
