BEKENU: A familiar structure in the heart of Bekenu is set to take on a new role, backed by nearly RM1 million in federal funding and a tight 24-week construction timeline.

The old Open Air Market, once a central meeting point for traders and residents, is undergoing a major renovation as part of the Ministry of Health’s (MOH’s) effort to strengthen preventive healthcare at the community level.

When completed, the site will be known as Wellness Hub Sibuti-a centre designed to promote long-term health and wellness among local residents.

The refurbishment, awarded to contractor Indah Suria Enterprise, carries a project cost of RM977,804. Work officially began on June 5, 2025 and is expected to be completed by November 20,2025.

Recently, Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni visited the site. He was accompanied by Dr P Raviwharmman Packierisamy, Miri’s Divisional Health Officer.

The 24-week timeline includes structural upgrades and the integration of modern, eco-friendly design elements.

Once complete, the facility will include offices, consultation and meeting rooms, a multimedia studio, a wellness gallery, a fitness studio, and a gymnasium.

Wellness Hub Sibuti is expected to offer a comprehensive range of services, including health risk assessments, smoking cessation support, weight and diet management through the IFitEr (I Fit and Eat Right) programme, and lifestyle counselling.

The hub’s primary target groups include teenagers, working adults, senior citizens, and housewives- demographics that are often underserved in terms of sustained access to preventive healthcare.
