MARUDI: A fatal accident involving a 10-tonne cement-laden lorry claimed one life and left another victim seriously injured after the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a roadside embankment at Jalan Miri-Marudi, Bukit BLD, here yesterday (Feb 14).
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department’s Operations Centre received an emergency call at 1.58 pm and immediately deployed a rescue team from Marudi Fire Station to the scene.
Upon arrival, firefighters discovered two victims trapped inside the mangled remains of the lorry. The rescue operation required the use of specialised hydraulic rescue tools to extricate the victims.
Additionally, an oil palm estate company excavator was brought in to pull the lorry free from the deeply embedded soil, allowing rescuers better access to the vehicle.
One victim was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics on-site, while the other was rushed to hospital for treatment.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
