KABONG: A jobless man’s alleged extra job as an online gambling top-up agent came to an end when police arrested him at a hut near Simpang Nyabor yesterday (Aug 19).
The 41-year-old local was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) during an operation, dubbed ‘Ops Dadu’, targeting illegal gambling activities.
Saratok police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said police also seized a Redmi 9A phone believed to have been used in the alleged operation.
“Initial investigations found that the suspect had been selling online gambling top-ups for about a week, targeting customers from nearby Kampung Nyabor and Kampung Sessang who passed through Simpang Empat Nyabor.
“The suspect, who has no permanent job, reportedly admitted to acting as an online gambling agent to earn extra income,” he said.
A urine screening conducted on him returned negative for drugs.
Background checks found that the suspect has no prior criminal record.
Mathew said the case is being investigated under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 for allegedly selling or distributing gaming chances.
If convicted, the offence carries a fine of up to RM50,000 and imprisonment of up to three years.
