KUCHING: An elderly local man was left RM91,720.76 poorer after falling victim to an online part-time job scam.
Kuching Police Chief, ACP Alexson Naga Chabu, said the incident began on July 16 when the 69-year-old victim logged into a website – https://pro-urdcareer.top/login – to start the supposed job.
“He had been promised commissions for completing online tasks by the suspect. The victim was later added into a WhatsApp group named ‘Ureed 480’, where he was instructed to make multiple payments.
“Throughout the scheme, the man made 16 online transactions into 16 different accounts as directed, resulting in total losses of RM91,720.76,” he said.
He later reported the incident to the police on August 18 for further investigation.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property.
Upon conviction, the offence carries imprisonment of up to 10 years, whipping and a fine.
Alexson advised the public to be cautious when encountering suspicious job offers or money-making schemes online.
He pointed out that scams can be avoided if people remain informed and vigilant.
This latest case brings the total number of similar scams investigated by Kuching police from January to August 18 this year to 34, involving the same modus operandi and overall losses of RM1.42 million.
