Opar assemblyman, Bully Sujang, has called for the development of a new township, citing rapid population growth and rising demand for commercial, residential and community facilities in Opar.

He said the proposal aligns with Budget 2026’s vision for a prosperous, connected and sustainable Sarawak, thereby positioning Opar as a strategic new growth hub for southern Sarawak.

“As Sarawak continues its rapid development, it is timely to begin planning for an Opar New Township.

“This is a matter of great importance for the future of my constituency,” he said when debating the Supply (2026) Bill at the DUN sitting today.

Furthermore, Billy stressed that the lack of a formally planned township has deprived Opar of its potential, especially in tourism, agriculture, cross-border trade, medical tourism and community development.

“Without a properly planned township, the full potential of Opar cannot be fully recognised,” he said.

Billy added that with several major projects underway, including the Metropolitan Food Cluster (MFC) in Stungkor, the Selampit Bridge, the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) in Biawak, and the new Lundu Treatment Plant, upgraded access roads, and community initiatives under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).

“Opar is now in a strong position to grow into a regional centre. The timing is right and the people deserve this progress,” he said.

Additionally, he said the new township will create a modern, organised and future-ready hub for the Opar-Biawak corridor while uplifting the socio-economic landscape of Lundu and southern Sarawak.

“This township will be a meaningful legacy project that empowers rural communities, creates jobs and provides a modern living environment for future generations,” he said.
