THE federal government has been urged to take immediate action to rebuild the aging classroom block at SK Selampit in Lundu.

According to Opar assemblyman Billy Sujang, the classroom building at the school is no longer safe for use.

Despite not being officially classified as a dilapidated school, the structure is aged, deteriorating, and still in use due to a lack of alternatives, he revealed.

He urged the federal government to take the matter seriously, stating that the safety of students and the future of the younger generation should not be compromised.

“There are no officially listed dilapidated schools in Opar, but there are school buildings like at SK Selampit that are clearly no longer fit for use. Yet, they continue to be used as classrooms. This should not be the case,” he said when debating in support of the motion of appreciation to the Head of State’s address in the House today.

He also raised several infrastructure issues in the Opar constituency, calling for urgent funding and action.

Highlighting the lack of access road to the ongoing Selampit Bridge project, he said although the 200-metre bridge is currently under construction, the surrounding 2-kilometre road connecting to Kampung Selampit has yet to receive funding.

“The estimated cost is RM22 million to reach Kampung Selampit. I appeal to the Premier to consider allocating funding for this access road under the Projek Rakyat initiative,” he said.

He also proposed a RM66 million upgrade to the Bitokan–Selampit road, which is expected to experience increased traffic from oil palm trucks once the bridge is operational.

“Once again, I urge the Premier to channel funds under Projek Rakyat for upgrading this road, the estimated cost being RM66 million, as calculated by PWD.

“This road will eventually serve as the main access route to Kampung Selampit, Kampung Kendaie, Kampung Pasir Hilir, and Kampung Pasir Tengah once the bridge is operational,” said Sujang.

In addition, he cited the delayed Kendaie–Sedaing road project, approved in 2023 with RM77 million in federal funding, as another urgent concern.

He urged the Public Works Department (PWD) Sarawak to accelerate implementation for the benefit of residents in several villages and school communities.

“The people of Kampung Kendaie, Kampung Bukit Batu, Kampung Pasir Hilir, and SK Kendaie are eagerly awaiting the construction to begin.

“I therefore appeal to PWD Sarawak to expedite the project for the well-being of all residents,” he said.
