KUCHING: The education sector in the Opar state constituency has received a boost of RM7 million to upgrade educational facilities in rural areas.
A meeting between Opar Assemblyman, Billy Sujang, and representatives from the Sarawak State Education Department at the Kuching District Education Office on Thursday concluded with plans to upgrade Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Sebako after the existing structure was deemed not financially viable to repair.
An allocation of RM5 million has been approved under the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) Fund for N1 Opar to upgrade the current building from an Industrialised Building System (IBS) structure to a concrete building.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has been entrusted to prepare and manage the development plans for the project.
Another RM2 million under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) funding has been allocated to upgrade and repair facilities at several schools within the Lundu District, including Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Lundu, SMK Sematan, SMK Senibong, SK Holy Name Rukam, SK Pasir Tengah, and SK Sebako.
“Education is the foundation of our children’s future. Therefore, I am committed to ensuring that schools in rural areas also benefit from modern, safe and conducive facilities so that our young generation can learn in the best possible environment,” Billy said during the meeting.
