KUALA LUMPUR: The Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department (JIM) raided three foreign-run business hotspots in the capital and detained 30 individuals for various immigration offences in integrated operations conducted at noon on Sunday.

In Ops Belanja and Ops Selera, which also involved the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM), and Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Kuala Lumpur, 16 business premises suspected of being operated by foreigners were inspected in raids carried out in Maluri, Pantai Dalam and Segambut Dalam.

According to sources, 17 foreign men were detained in Maluri, five in Pantai Dalam, and eight in Segambut Dalam.

“The detainees comprise 29 men and one woman, from Bangladesh, Myanmar, Indonesia, India and Pakistan, who are mostly in their 40s.

“Such operations will be intensified to ensure strict enforcement action is taken against any party found to have violated laws amid allegations of takeover of local businesses by foreigners,” the source said.

A BERNAMA observation during the four-hour operations found that most of those detained had violated permit conditions, particularly holders of construction sector permits, but were found operating grocery shops and food outlets.

During the same operations, SSM issued 15 notices to the inspected premises for various offences, including failure to display registered company names and registration numbers at business premises, as well as not displaying signboards, business names and registration numbers.

Kuala Lumpur KPDN also issued 10 compounds amounting to RM6,500 for offences involving pricing and weighing instruments.

Those detained were taken to the Kuala Lumpur Immigration Enforcement Division for further checks and investigations under Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63. – BERNAMA
